Lamp among best US divers
All-American, two-time state champ at BHS 2nd among top US college divers

Among almost all of the nation’s top female divers — in all age groups — Bearden High’s Tori Lamp took second at USA Diving Senior National Championships women’s 10-meter platform event in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., April 23-36.

Shannon Roy, Knox-area high school and middle school diving coach the past 11 years, said Lamp’s finish came among all but two of the top-20 best divers in the United States, including college.

“It’s absolutely amazing, the fact that [BHS is] a relatively small program in a small city like Knoxville can produce such a high-quality diver … an amazing achievement,” he said.

A two-time high school state champion and two-time All-American, Lamp also was 2008 Junior National Champion in age 16-18 platform event who also placed fifth in Junior World Champion-ships last year in Germany. She also is a Senior National Team representative who recently competed in Canada. Among an international field, Lamp was 11th. “She earned that from her performance at the World Championships Selection Trials [sixth-place], which is in February,” Roy said.

As a Tennessee Lady Volunteers freshman next fall, Lamp said her “short-term goal is to win N-C-AAs next year in college. I have a chance, but it will be difficult.

“And then I’d like to make a world championship team,” the 18-year-old BHS senior added. “And then be on the 2012 Olympic team.

“That’s always in the back of my mind, it’s definitely one of my biggest goals and it’s been a dream since I was about 12 or 13.”

At UT, “She’s got a great program behind her,” said Roy, himself a five-time Vols All-American, including NCAA runner-up in 2000 and two-time Southeastern Conference champ. “She has every opportunity to fulfill and realize her potential.”

Among all the divers Roy has coached, Lamp is “possibly one of the most talented, if not the most talented, I’ve been lucky enough to coach in the female rankings,” he said. “And she’s come such a long way in such a short time.”

As for Lamp’s hopes of earning a USA team diving spot for the 2012 London, England, Olympics, Roy said, “In my beliefs, she has the potential to get there.

“She’s got a gymnastics background, which helps a lot with her acrobatic skills,” Roy added. “She’s got a great determination and desire to be good and she puts in the effort all the time.”
