Bearden holds off MHS in 4-AAA second round

Maryville pitcher Tommy Wilkinson had the Bearden Bulldogs figured out through four innings May 5 during the District 4-AAA tourney at BHS’s Phil Garner Field.

But as first reported at Farragut First Edition, www.farragutpress.com, in the end, the Bearden bats came to life and the No. 2 seeded Dawgs (28-12-1) claimed a 3-2 win versus No. 3 Maryville.

Bearden senior Garrett Copeland allowed only four Rebels to reach base through the same four innings. “I knew the sticks would come around.” Copeland said. “We have always hit the ball well and I knew they would come around eventually.”

Senior Ryan Potter broke up the no-hitter with a one-out double scoring Jacob “Taco” Edwards, who reached first via a walk and promptly stole second base.

“Taco did a good job of getting on in front of me and put me in a good situation to get a hit,” Potter said. Potter drilled the pitch off the centerfield fence and not only ended the no-hitter but the RBI put the Dawgs on the board first.

Chase Keen walked and Mark Lail doubled to drive in Potter, making it 2-0.

BHS added a run in the sixth when Ryan Ford singled, stole second and scored on Sean Greenway’s double off the wall.
