• Rita Layman, Walter Solomon and Randy Stevens recently were elected to the office of Elder of the Class of 2012 at Faith Fellowship Cumberland Presbyterian Church and installed Sunday, April 26. Layman and Stevens also were ordained. Solomon had previously been ordained in the Cumberland Presbyterian church as an Elder. The Rev. Dr. Jeff Sledge, senior pastor, conducted the ordination and installation.

• All ladies are invited to lunch with Knoxville Christian Women’s Connection at 10:45 a.m., Thursday, May 14, at Buddy’s Bearden Banquet Hall off Kingston Pike. Special feature is a Spring Fashion Show by Belk’s. Hope Horkavy will explain how “a shot in the dark helped her find true freedom.” She also will perform musically.

• Faith Lutheran Church plans its vacation Bible school to celebrate The Lord’s Prayer through a “Kingdom of the Sun” theme from 9 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., June 1–5, for children ages 3 to fifth-grade. Registration forms for participants and volunteers are available online at www.faithloves.org, the Faith Early Learning Center, or the VBS board located inside the church, 239 Jamestown Blvd. All forms must be received by Monday, May 22.

• St. John Neumann Catholic Church will host a bake sale to benefit the needy in the community, sponsored by St. Vincent de Paul Society, after all masses the weekend of May 16 and 17. Donations of baked goods may be brought to the cafeteria at St. John Neumann School from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, May 16; sign-ups for donations are in the Narthex.

• Westside Unitarian Universalist Church has announced its next month of Sunday services: May 17 “Religious Education Celebration Sunday,” May 24: “Time As I Have Known It” and May 31 “A Few Words For The Snake.” All services begin at 11 a.m.

• Christ Covenant Church plans a mission trip to Madrid, Spain, June 13-20.

• Virtue Cumberland Presbyterian Church holds its “Pickin’ for the Lord” event the second Tuesday of each month. Dinner is served at 6 p.m. and music begins at 7 p.m.



• Union Cumberland Presbyterian Church plans a “Law Enforcement Sunday,” at 6 p.m., Sunday, May 31.

• Community members in Cumberland and surrounding counties are invited to participate in a Blessing of the Animals ceremony beginning at 10 a.m., Saturday, May 16. Blessing will take place on 4th Street, between Main Street and Thurman Avenue. John Halliburton of First United Methodist Church will administer the blessing. Event is free, but donations will be distributed among participating animal rescue organizations.

• The WordPlayers are offering Summer 2009 Acting Instruction for Young People. “CreACTitivity,” for children ages 8-10, will be held from June 15 to 19 at Middlebrook Christian Ministries, 1540 Robinson Road.
