Cope says McMurry’s tennis singles state draw ‘toughest’
Alan Sloan - Thu, May, 21, 2009
Kayla McMurry begins her quest for a Class AAA tennis singles state title today with no breaks from the bracket makers.
McMurry, Bearden High School junior, takes a 16-1 record into TSSAA state quarterfinal action beginning at 9 a.m., Thursday, May 21, at MTSU.
Winning the Region 2-AAA crown last week, McMurry “is playing as well as she’s played all year,” BHS head coach Clint Cope said. However, “She’s got a pretty tough draw, she’s gotta play a girl who made it to the finals last year in the first round.” That girl is senior Kelly Gray of Siegel. “[Kayla] can win if she plays well.”
If McMurry makes it to semifinals Thursday afternoon, she’ll likely face the girl who knocked her out last year en route to the 2008 state title: Allison Hodges of Houston. “[Kayla’s] got the toughest draw of all the eight girls,” Cope said.
State singles championship match begins at 9 a.m, Friday, May 22, at MTSU.
