Soccer Dawgs win one, fall in state semis

A dominant performance against Columbia Central may or may not have carried momentum into Bearden’s Class AAA state semifinal soccer match with Brentwood in Murfreesboro.

Either way, the state’s No. 3-state-ranked Bruins scored twice in the final 22 minutes of the second half to rally past the No. 4 SoccerDawgs 2-1 in Richard Siegel Soccer Complex Thursday, May 21.

“The first half I thought we played exceptionally well,” BHS head coach Eric Turner said. “But for a 10-minute stretch they just took it to us.”

A first-half BHS goal from D.J. Pleasant would not stand up, as Bearden finishes the 2009 season 15-5-4. Alex Wilkerson assisted. The eventual state-runner-up Bruins (18-5-3) ended with an 11-4 edge in shots-on-goal.

In a 4-0 drubbing of Columbia Central (10-8-3), Bearden got goals from Wilkerson, Billy Miller, Nick Sisco and Ryan Ramsey. Ryan Campbell, Ian Little and Wilkerson each had one assist.

BHS led in shots-on-goal 9-4. “The kids came out and took care of business,” Turner said.

SoccerDawgs seniors playing or dressing for their final games during state tournament play were Pleasant, Miller, Little, Campbell, Sebastian Kimball, Scott Norman and Chad Miracle.

Turner said: “Campbell’s been a great forward for us for four years.” Norman, central defender, “had a great career.” Miller, a halfback, “stuck with the program.” Pleasant, a captain, and Little “have been great kids to be around for four years.”
