Pei Wei Asian Diner to open its doors

Pei Wei Asian Diner, from the P.F. Chang’s family of restaurants, will be opening its first Knoxville restaurant in Turkey Creek in early August.

“We call it a fast-casual, or quick casual, version. It’s actually an Asian Diner, as opposed to Chang’s is a China Bistro,” Pei Wei spokesman Clay McAfee said.

He compared the restaurant to a Panera Bread, where customers order food at a counter. However, unlike Panera, food is delivered to the table and a small wait staff refills drinks, cleans tables and such.

“It’s a much more sophisticated environment. It’s got a very contemporary look to it,” McAfee said.

All items on the small menu are priced at under $10.

“It’s very affordable. … you can easily get in and out of Pei Wei for under $10,” McAfee said, adding the restaurant also has a limited wine and beer list.

“It’s a pretty quick turnaround. Our cook times are about five to seven minutes. You can get out really quickly compared to casual dining,” McAfee said.

The seven-year-old company is based out of Phoenix, Ariz. Over the past few years, the company has opened other locations around the nation.

“We’ve done very well in the Nashville market, so we felt like Knoxville, being such a great restaurant town … we better get down there before someone else does,” McAfee said.

McAfee hopes the restaurant , 11301 Parkside Drive, Suite 1200, at the entrance to the Pinnacle shopping center, will be opened by Aug. 10.

Pei Wei will be open from 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and from 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday. McAfee estimated the restaurant will seat about 70 people.

In addition to serving lunch and dinner, the restaurant offers carryout and catering platters.

“We have a catering menu, or a party menu. They’re bulk orders so most of the orders will feed five to seven people,” McAfee said.
