Boy, 3, dies off Carl Cowan Park shore

Tragedy struck at a child’s birthday party Sunday, June 28, at Carl Cowan Park in West Knox County.

Patrick Bradbury, 3, was attending another child’s birthday party with his family at the popular park when he wandered away and apparently drowned.

Patrick was first discovered missing around 6:35 p.m. Sunday night. His parents and other partygoers searched for him for about 10 minutes before calling 911 at 6:45 p.m.

When Rural Metro, Knoxville Volunteer Emergency Rescue Squad and Knox County Sheriff’s Office responders arrived, the park off Northshore Drive was closed.

After hours of searching involving a KCSO helicopter, K-9 teams and several boats, Bradbury’s body was found by a team of divers little more than 35 feet from the shore, in about 40 feet of water.

The KCSO police report states: “Investigator with regional forensic center responded to the scene and requested victim be transported to the regional forensic center for further investigation.”

As of press time Tuesday, June 31, investigation into Bradbury’s death was ongoing.

“It’s designated as an accidental drowning, but the medical examiner is doing an autopsy,” KCSO spokesperson Ashley Haynes said.

The autopsy is a formality, she said, but the investigation will remain open until those results are back.
