Boris top academic athlete at MMC

In addition to her team-leading nine home runs for Martin Methodist College, Alicia Boris knocked it out of the park academically and was “team-leading” among all student-athletes.

A former Bearden High School standout softball player, Boris earned both softball and academic honors at Martin Methodist, a NAIA school in Pulaski, highlighted by receiving an award for highest grade point average among all 280 MMC athletes.

“I was kinda surprised because there was another girl on the team who is very, very smart as well, so I thought she was going to be our top [scholar] athlete,” said Boris, who graduated with a 3.91 grade point average. “It was a great surprise. I was proud, but it was a shock.”

Twice named TranSouth All-Conference (2008, 2009) and an NAIA Scholar Athlete both years, Boris, 22, also earned the Marcus Nickell Award for academic achievement in biology before graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology.

“I enjoyed going to a smaller school ... it’s around 2,000 kids,” the 2009 graduate said. “I learned a lot and I grew up.”

Team co-captain the last two years while starting 110 games in three seasons, Boris twice was named TranSouth Conference Player of the Week as a senior in 2009 while batting .335 with the team-high nine home runs plus 11 doubles and 38 RBI.

“And I learned a lot from my coach, Brandie Paul,” Boris said. “I guess I just learned to work with a lot of the girls and be able to diffuse a lot of situations that needed to be, and lead the girls that needed to be led.”

Transferring from North Florida Community College in Madison, Fla., following her freshman year, Boris’ combined sophomore and junior seasons resulted in a .344 average with 52 RBI, 27 doubles, two triples and two home runs.

Now back in the Bearden community, Boris looks to enter graduate school to eventally become a physician assistant, nurse practitioner or dentist.
