• The second annual Irish Fest on the Hill fundraiser will take place at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 414 West Vine Ave., from 4 to 10:30 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 8. Four Leaf Peat and Shamrock Road will provide live Irish music. Event also will feature children’s activities, vendor booths, silent auction, Irish bake sale, music by the Lowland Strings and Starland Gypsy Bands and Irish dancers. Hot dogs and hamburgers will be served from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. A corned beef and cabbage dinner will be served from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Irish beer and wine (cash bar) will be available from 7 to 10:30 p.m. A donation of $10 ($15 at event) for adults and $5 for children includes dinner. • Greg Mortenson, author of the NY Times Bestseller “Three Cups of Tea,” will be the guest speaker at a dinner and lecture hosted by the Volunteer Ministry Center. Dinner and lecture will take place at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 1, at the Crowne Plaza Hotel. Mortenson, a Nobel Peace Prize nominee, will be sharing his experiences of building schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan for the impoverished villages in those countries. • Cokesbury United Methodist Church’s children’s center fall and winter clothing sale is back. Full price sale will be held from 8 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Aug. 22, and half-price sale from 1 to 3 p.m. that same day.
• First Farragut United Methodist Church, 12733 Kingston Pike, will sponsor a Mobile Pantry food giveaway in its sanctuary to local neighbors in need, beginning at 9 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 8. A semi-tractor trailer load of food will be distributed until all food has been handed out. Any area residents who are in need of help are encouraged to come to the church to receive food. The Mobile Pantry distributes food purchased from the Second Harvest Food Bank. The August Mobile Pantry is the fourth sponsored by FFUMC since 2007. Church volunteers and members of the Order of the Arrow Boy Scouts of America will be on hand to help distribute and load groceries, as well as packets of school supplies and used children’s clothing in good condition.
