Brodd triumphant
Former Lady Admiral repeats as KAWGA champion on Fox Den links

Successfully defending her Knox Area Women’s Golf Association championship last week, Jillian Brodd said “home course” advantage was critical.

Having begun playing at Fox Den Country Club “in middle school, probably around 13,” the former Farragut High School standout and Ole Miss junior golfer edged Jennifer Lucas representing Green Meadow Country Club 2 & 1 in a match play final Thursday, Aug. 6, at FDCC.

“I think it was a very big advantage, I knew where to place the ball and I knew the greens fairly well,” Brodd said of FDCC, adding her family is “members out there, so I get to play it quite a bit.”

Winning four match-play battles among a 16-woman quarterfinal field to defend her crown, Brodd said, “My golf game has been getting better this whole summer. I guess this was just a peak at this time.

“Ball striking was probably the best part of the tournament, but I was putting well, too, so it all just seemed to click,” she added. “I’d say I shot around even par.

“I felt pretty good going into the week, I knew I was going to be playing against some good players. In match play, really anyone can win.”

Another advantage, Brodd added, is “having all the experience with all the competitive golf that I play.”

At Ole Miss where she’s a business major with a 3.5 grade point average, Brodd has been named to the National Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar Team (minimum 3.5 grade point average while playing more than 50 percent of all national collegiate golf tourneys).

“I felt that was a pretty big honor considering I think they were only 21 other S-E-C golfers named to it,” said Brodd, also earning SEC All-Academic Team honors each of her first two years in Oxford.

As a sophomore at UM last season, “I played better in the S-E-C, got better each day. I’ve definitely settled down a lot since my freshman year.”

Instead of an individual goal for the upcoming season, Brodd said she’s focused on the Lady Rebels’ team success, hoping they can reach nationals. “We made regionals this year,” she said.

Other Westside-area golfers with top finishes were, First Flight: Karen Neidhardt, Fox Den, defeated Sharon Vick, Tellico Village, 4 & 3.

First Flight Consolation: Barb Montavon, Gettysvue, defeated Margaret Cunningham, Green Meadow, 3 & 1

Second Flight: Judy Henry, Fox Den, finished second to

Karen Jones, Oak Ridge (4 & 3).

Second Flight Consolation: Susan Schleicher, Gettysvue, finished second to Pat Christenberry, Cherokee (5 & 3).

Third Flight Consolation: Sue Tackett, Fox Den defeated Thelma Douglass, Oak Ridge, 2 & 1.
