• University of North Alabama, a perennial power in Division II college football, recently announced wide receiver Jason Messing (2004-07), a 2002 Farragut High School graduate and ex-Admirals standout, is a member of UNA’s “Football Team of the Decade - 1999-2008.” A four-year letterman and three-year starter, Messing’s 23 career receiving touchdowns is a UNA record. His 1,952 career receiving yards ranks second in UNA history, as do his nine TD catches in 2005.

• Women’s 5.0 tennis team from West Knox County, led by captain Kelli Harris, won the 2009 United State Tennis Association League Southern Section Championships, held recently in Birmingham, Ala. Participating in what is billed as the largest adult recreational tennis league in the world, Harris’ team advances to national competition.

• Derek Harper, former Farragut High School standout defensive end/tight end (Class of 2009), has accepted an invitation as a preferred walk-on at The University of Tennessee, Chattanooga, a Southern Conference member. Earning All-Region 2-5A honors last season, Harper said, “I wanted the opportunity to play at a higher level, and U-T-C is giving me that chance. I intend to prove people and coaches wrong who said I was too small for their program.”

• Todd Armstrong, a former CBFO Football Commissioner, recently was named to that position again according to Don Hutcheson, CBFO board member and softball commissioner. Armstrong replaces Brad Burkett, new football head coach at The Episcopal School of Knoxville.

• 2009 Russell Biven Summer Clayfest Tournament (golf) is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, Aug. 14-15, at Birds and Clays in Washburn.
