• Physical therapist John Dorset of The University of Tennessee Medical Center recently received his Doctorate of Physical Therapy from The University of Tennessee Chattanooga. Dorset, a team leader, sees patients at the medical center’s Northshore Physical Therapy Clinic in Knoxville.

• James M. Downing, PE, of Barge Waggoner Sumner and Cannon, Inc., has been appointed to The University of Tennessee College of Engineering Board of Advisors. Downing serves as Chairman of the Board for BWSC, and has been with the firm since 1996. 

• Amy Smith has joined the Tennessee Bankers Association as associate counsel. Smith, who most recently was assistant general counsel for the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance, will work with TBA Senior Vice President and General Counsel Tim Amos in monitoring legislative and regulatory issues and policies that affect the banking industry and advising the TBA board of directors, officers and member banks.

• West Town Mall will host a “Christian Business Expo,” from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 12, and from noon to 6 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 13. Event will introduce community to local businesses owned by Christians.

• First Tennessee launches its new Web site, the redesigned The site is more user-friendly, with streamlined content and upgraded functionality. Information is packaged in short, easy-to-absorb nuggets. Navigation is quicker and more intuitive. The redesign incorporates the look of the bank’s “powering your dreams” brand promise and provides tools to support that pledge. These new features include: a loan recommender, planning center, interactive smart savings calculator and business resource center. First Tennessee plans other enhancements to the Web site that include new online payments features, streamlined access to treasury management services and mobile banking capabilities.

• UT-Battelle has announced a gift of $175,000 to Oak Ridge Playhouse to help restore one of the oldest community theaters in the Southeast. The gift, presented by Oak Ridge National Laboratory Director Thom Mason prior to Friday’s Playhouse production of “The Graduate,” is part of the Oak Ridge Playhouse “Next Stage” fundraising campaign. Mason said the funds will be used for a new marquee and will help the Playhouse leverage the $2 million needed to renovate the theatre’s aging facilities.

• Town of Farragut will host “What Now? 7 Steps for Surviving Unemployment,” led by Stephen Arnold, Storehouse Advisory Group founder and financial planner, from 6:30 to 9 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 15. Participants will be equipped with practical tools for surviving unemployment, including effective stress management, making informed decisions, reducing expenses, leveraging trends in the job market, conducting a 21st century job search, getting your resume noticed and winning the interview. • The Franklin Square Merchants Association will host Pink Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 19, at the Shops at Franklin Square, 9700 Kingston Pike. Coupons can be purchased for $5 ahead of time, or on that day, to receive discounts, special services and access to sidewalk sales from Franklin Square merchants. Special activities for children and refreshments will be provided. For a donation of $20 or more, coupon holders can participate in a drawing for other merchandise and services. • Directors of BB&T Corporation elected J. Littleton “Litt” Glover Jr., a metro Atlanta lawyer and commercial real estate developer, to its corporate board. Glover, 66, joins the BB&T corporate board after 10 years as a director of Branch Banking and Trust Company, the pricipal subsidiary of N.C.-based BB&T Corporation. Glover is president and a director of Glover & Davis, P.A.

• The board of directors of BB&T Corporation declared the 2009 fourth quarter dividend of $0.15 per share. Dividend will be paid Nov. 2 to shareholders of record as of Oct. 16. BB&T has paid a cash dividend to shareholders every year since 1903. June 30, BB&T had $152.4 billion in assets and was the nation’s 11th largest financial holding company.

• Rather & Kittrell announces the promotion of Chad Starliper to Chief Investment Officer. Starliper will have overall responsibility for heading Rather & Kittrell’s investment committee, which oversees the research and design of the firm’s global tactical investment strategies.

• Ellen Hubrig, president of The Society of Friendly Fellows and author of “Daily Thoughts for Friendly Fellows, Reflections on Seeing the Good in Ourselves and Others,” will talk with Hallerin Hilton Hill on WNOX News Talk Radio at 8 a.m., Sunday, Sept. 10. • Through first quarter 2009, Allstate saw a 26.6 percent increase in the number of Tennessee homeowners switching to landlord policies over prior year. Evidence of the still struggling housing market is visible in the most recent data from the National Association of Realtors that shows existing-home sales were down 3.6 percent in May 2009 compared to the previous year.

• Jefferson Federal Bank’s Charitable Foundation has donated $35,000 to Helen Ross McNabb Center, after its merger with New Hope Recovery Center. When the entities merged, there was an existing mortgage on the New Hope Recovery Center Facility. This donation was used to pay off the mortgage that New Hope Recovery had been carrying and will allow the Helen Ross McNabb Center to operate debt free.

• Bonus Building Care announces it recently participated in a ribbon cutting Aug. 11 to celebrate its one year anniversary in business in conjunction with Farragut West Knox Chamber of Commerce.
