Taste of Farragut slated for Friday

The inaugural Taste of Farragut event will be held from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., Friday, Sept. 11, in the old Kroger parking lot, featuring food and beverages from Farragut businesses and benefiting a child advocacy charity.

“We’re trying to do an event that focuses on the food in Farragut … so that we can show the citizens of the Town what resources are available right here in the Town’s borders,” David Purvis, president of Childhelp, said in a previous farragutpress interview.

Childhelp provides advocacy and foster family services to sexually and physically abused children in Knox County.

“Childhelp serves the physically and sexually abused children of Knox County,” Purvis said.

Of the approximately 1,200 reported allegations of child abuse in Knox County, Childhelp handled 437 of those last year.

Of those, 38 were in the 37922 and 37934 ZIP Codes.

“So right here in our back yard, there were 38 cases where we actually served the kids,” Purvis said.

Childhelp is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.

Businesses participating in the Taste of Farragut include Shrimp Dock, Seasons Café, Tastefully Simple, Buddy’s BBQ, Oskie’s Sports Bar and Grill, Snappy Tomato Pizza, Estelita’s Authentic Mexican Cuisine, VG’s Bakery, Kroger Marketplace, Wild Wing Cafe and Silo Cigars.

The planned menu is large and varied.

Shrimp Dock will serve low country boil, Buddy’s BBQ will serve pork barbecue with Buddy’s sauce. Oskie’s will serve “Oskie Balls,” which are pizza balls dipped in beer batter and deep fried, sliders and wings.

Snappy Tomato will serve samplings of its pizzas. VG’s will serve cookie and dessert bars. Wild Wing will serve various wings, and Tastefully Simple will serve potato cheese soup, cubed beer bread with spinach herb garlic dip, spicy fiesta party dip, almond pound cake mini muffins, key lime cheese ball and “slush” beverages.

Alcoholic beverages will be provided by B&T Distributing, Beverage Control, Inc., Knoxville Beverage, Triple C Distributing and D&V Distributing.

“We hope this is a multi-year event. We’re starting kind of small this year so we can keep control over it, make sure this comes off as a quality event and hope we can move forward to an annual event in the fall,” Purvis said to Farragut’s Board of Mayor and Aldermen, Thursday, Aug. 13.

“I think this is something we can grow into a Town-wide event, involving a lot more businesses than are involved this year.

“We have a lot of people who are wanting to come do this,” he added.

Sponsors for the event include farragutpress, WFIV 105.3 FM and the town of Farragut.

Entertainment will be provided by WFIV and by a bluegrass band.

Tickets are on sale before the event at a $5 discount; call Childhelp at 865-637-1753.

Tickets also can be bought the night of the event for $25 for adults, $20 for seniors and $5 for children.

Taste of Farragut will be held rain or shine.
