Franklin Square to host second annual Pink Saturday

Franklin Square merchants plan Pink Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 19, an event to benefit Knoxville Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure and Cathy L. Hodges Memorial Cancer Foundation.

“Cathy L. Hodges died of breast cancer, and she was the wife of Bill Hodges, who developed the entire complex.

“He built Franklin Square shopping center, he built the offices behind the shopping center, and he built Franklin Square subdivision,” Franklin Merchants Association spokesperson Barbara Ashdown said.

Pink Saturday was begun last year by the Merchants Association in Hodges’ memory.

“She was very community-oriented and committed to supporting work on fighting breast cancer,” Ashdown said.

This year’s Pink Saturday event will feature sidewalk sales, complimentary appetizers from Chop House and a prize drawing, as well as various health information booths.

“All the merchants will offer discounts or special services … and they’re also going to have sidewalk sales,” Ashdown said.

Attendees of the event can purchase a $5 ticket, opening them to sales, discounts and special services from Franklin Square merchants. Donate $20 and be entered into a prize drawing.

Money from donations and ticket sales will be split 50-50 between the two breast cancer organizations.

“These events really benefit the community, and they’re intended also to let people know about the shopping center and what’s going on,” Ashdown said.

Also on hand during Pink Saturday will be The Knoxville Comprehensive Breast Center Mobile Digital Mammography Coach (appointments for mammograms can be scheduled in advance at 865-583-2935).

“They’ll have a full service unit there for people who want to get mammograms that day, and they do want you to make an appointment in advance,” Ashdown said.

Also at Pink Saturday will be The Breast Center at Fort Sanders West Diagnostic Center and The University Breast Center.

Medic Blood Mobile also will be on site accepting blood donations.
