Spartans mix pass, run at FRA to stay unbeaten
Kim Johnson, Correspondent - Thu, Sep, 24, 2009
The Webb School of Knoxville Spartans, No. 7-ranked statewide (AP) in Division II-A, remain undefeated after a convincing 35-14 win over East/Middle Region foe Franklin Road Academy in Nashville Friday, Sept. 18.
The Spartans (4-0), who normally rely on a the run from its wing-T offense, changed things up quite a bit with a passing game.
“[Quarterback] Parker Wormsley threw for 275 yards. That is a record for Webb School since I have been here because we don’t throw it that much,” Spartans head coach Dave Meske said. “He was 8-of-12 for 275 yards.”
Whether the change up was due to the one game loss — due to injury — of standout All-state running back Caleb Blance or just a new tactic by Meske, the running game also worked.
“We got down 14-7 and came back right before half. With about 35 seconds left we threw a touchdown pass to Aaron Blance to go up 21-14,” Meske said.
Aaron, the other half of Meske’s Blance Brothers duo, scored three of the Spartans’ five touchdowns in the first, second and fourth quarters. Junior David Wilhoite and senior Jason Berube also scored in the third quarter. The FRA Panthers fall to 2-2.
