Unbeaten FHS boys golf repeats as state champs
Alan Sloan - Thu, Oct, 8, 2009
Farragut High School’s boys golf team finished a perfect 2009 season by repeating as TSSAA Class AAA state champions Wednesday, Sept. 30, at Old Fort Golf Course in Murfreesboro.
While the FHS program has won every tournament and match it has played since its first tourney in 2008, this year’s Admirals won state by an 11-stroke margin versus runner-up Hendersonville (508-609). Farragut built upon a four-stroke lead after the first 18 holes Tuesday, Sept. 29.
Davis Bunn, Region 2-AAA champion and a Tennessee-Chattanooga signee, led the Admirals’ two-day charge by finishing fourth (147), followed by teammate and fellow senior Hayden Anderson, a Georgia Southern signee, who took sixth (149).
“Davis had a tremendous year,” FHS head coach Scott McKenzie said. “Hayden had a great year.”
Mitchell Thomas finished tied for ninth (150), while Taylor Diegel, District 4-AAA champ, ended tied for 13th (152).
“We obviously couldn’t have won this thing without Diegel [junior] and Thomas [sophomore],” McKenzie said. “The second day they both came in with 74s, and that’s saying a lot. Mitchell Thomas, he’s a grinder, I mean, he focused.”
Brandon Rodgers, a Tennessee Volunteers signee, shot 155 (top four scores count as team total).
Including Rodgers, Bunn and Anderson, McKenzie said, “I’m proud of my three seniors.”
So dominant was FHS in 2009, “Every tournament we’ve won this year we’ve won by 20 strokes or better,” McKenzie said.
