FHS Volleyball short of state; Moore resigns after 23 years
Alan Sloan - Thu, Oct, 29, 2009
A championship-laden season and a championship-laden career spanning almost one-quarter century both ended last Thursday at Kingsport Dobyns-Bennett High School.
The Farragut Lady Admirals' bid for another Class AAA state tournament berth was squashed by powerful Dobyns-Bennett in Sectional play Oct. 22, a straight games Lady Indians sweep 25-14, 25-23, 25-21.
One day before, FHS head coach David Moore announced his 23-year head coaching stint with Lady Admirals volleyball was over.
“I told the kids Wednesday night [Oct. 21] I wouldn't be coaching next year,” Moore said of his decision to resign after 731 career wins, five state tourney berths, six region titles, 10 District 4-AAA league crowns and 10 4-AAA tournament championships.
As for the reason, “I need some more time with my kids,” Moore said. “Coaching two sports [meant] taking the summer away. ... And I've got more responsibilities at church.”
Moore, who also has led FHS softball to district and region honors and state tournament berths, will remain as that program's head coach.
“It's time to coach just one for a while,” Moore said. “It's not hard to walk away from all the time involved, but it is hard to walk away from all the wonderful young ladies that I've had the privilege to coach.”
Moore's final team ends with a 41-10 record.
Despite FHS “playing nervous” in game one, Moore said his Lady Ads “gave them a run. If we could have won that second game ... you give yourself a shot.”
The Lady Admirals earned its sectional trip by sweeping Oak Ridge in Region 2-AAA semifinal action at Anderson County Oct. 20 before losing a hard-fought five-game match to eventual state tournament representative Karns for the region title.
Standout senior setter/middle hitter Kylann Scheidt — rated by one service as No. 21 among the nation's top high school seniors according to Moore — joined junior outside hitter Kassie Detchemendy as All-region tournament honorees.
“I thought Kayla Hartman did a solid job setting for us and serving,” Moore said. “I thought Kendall [Knisley] had a good region tournament for us, too.”
Against K-DB, Knisley had seven kills. Riley Miller had five points and 15 digs. “I thought Riley had a good region and sectional,” Moore said.
Summing up 2009, Moore said, “We had one senior, about three kids with not much varsity time at all ... I thought this group went a long way.”
