Farragut’s final playoff tune-up was a quick first-quarter knockout witnessed on Senior Night at FHS’s Bill Clabo Field.

Ranked No. 8 statewide in Class 6A and ending the 2009 regular season second in District 4-AAA, the Admirals easily dumped district foe William Blount 45-0 Friday, Oct. 30.

The Governors end a disappointing season, 3-7, 1-6 in 4-AAA.

Farragut (8-2, 6-1) scored three touchdowns and one field goal on its first four possessions and never punted.

Chris Bass, FHS senior defensive back/running back, said his team “has great momentum going in, I think we should go really far in the playoffs.”

A Gov fumble on their first snap from scrimmage was recovered by Farragut at the WB 18. FHS quarterback Reese Browning found a wide-open Lee Van Dyne for a 13-yard touchdown pass.

David Allen took a punt at the FHS 36 and eventually sailed down the sideline untouched on a 64-yard TD return making it 14-0.

Kicker Christian Ponce nailed a 29-yard field goal making it 17-0 at the 3:09 mark of the first quarter.

Ponce attributed his senior success to kicking coach Gerald Robinson. “He’s helped me a ton,” Ponce said. “It’s just meant so much to me.”

Allen hauled in Browning’s 55-yard touchdown pass.

Despite starting two freshmen on the offensive line, “We’re just a close-knit unit,” said FHS senior guard Kevin Sellers, who along with senior tackle Jacob Gilliam and junior center Bobby Fricks comprise the line’s veterans.

Taino Perez’s 28-yard run preceded DeAndre Purty’s 25-yard TD run making it 31-0 late in the half.

Cody Rule’s 20-yard pass to Garrett Bowdle set up a one-yard Perez TD run. A 60-yard TD march led by back-up quarterback Bryan Tillman included freshman running back Jackson Fain‘s 21-yard jaunt and his 5-yard scoring run.

Defensive highlights included senior linebacker Ryan Walker’s assisted tackles of minus 10 and minus-8. “I think the defense is doing great,” he said.

Greg Grieco had hits of minus-2, minus-4 and a 10-yard sack assist also shared with Gabe White, who also had a minus-9 sack. Robbie Leonard had a minus-8 sack assist.
