SoccerDawgs season ends in OT at OR

OAK RIDGE — Bearden woke from its roughly 60-minute offensive slumber in a do-or-die showdown of powerhouse teams, during Region 2-AAA semifinals versus Oak Ridge, in time to force overtime tied 2-2.

But Kaelyn Angelo’s goal after an OR corner kick ended No. 3 state-ranked BHS’s season 1:18 into the second five-minute “golden goal” sudden death OT, 3-2.

“If you give up a goal on a corner kick at the end of a game like that, you don’t deserve to go on,” said Bearden head coach Eric Turner, whose team ends 19-2-1. “We didn’t do the little things, we didn’t win balls — we had our opportunities, but we didn’t finish, they did.”

No. 5 Oak Ridge (18-4-1), going on to earn a TSSAA state berth, outplayed BHS until the final 20 minutes of regulation play.

Samantha Turner tied the game 1-1 with 19:56 left in regulation. The BHS junior All-state forward’s free kick, from just beyond the outside left corner of the 18-yard box, slipped inside the left post

Bearden freshman Gabrielle Gianeselli tied it with 6:14 left in regulation. She took a failed defensive clearing attempt and blasted a rising shot from 20 yards out that sailed just under the crossbar.
