CAK girls repeat at state

Brittany Hoffman’s eventual state championship-winining goal with 1:44 to play reflected both the talent and confidence of Christian Academy of Knoxville girls soccer.

Hoffman, senior All-state midfielder-forward, has now helped lead CAK to three Class A-AA state titles in four years after the Lady Warriors edged Notre Dame 2-1 Saturday, Nov. 7, in Chattanooga.

Hoffman scored both CAK goals, the game-winner assisted by Paige Hoffman.

“Even though the match was tied, they were not rattled in any way,” said first-year head coach Ried Estus, whose team finished unbeaten, 24-0-1. “We have incredibly talented players. They are great athletes.

“I’m convinced that we would have gotten the game-winner had we gone to overtime, or penalty kicks,” he added. “I was just that confident with our kids and our composure.”

Estus praised the senior leadership of Hoffman, forward and team captain Ruthie Edmunds, midfielder and assist leader Mary Thompson and defender Rebecca Schoutco. Hoffman, Edmunds and sophomore Kiah Allen all scored “around 20 goals.”

Estus labeled Hoffman, a Samford University commitment, “a gifted player. ... she’s big time.” About Edmunds, he said, “If the ball’s anywhere around the front of the goal she’s going to tuck it in.”

The coach said Allen “is a special player,” adding Thompson “does a lot of heavy lifting out there.” He praised freshman Laura Foster as an “unbelievable defender.”
