FHS rips Alcoa, edges Seymour in GHS tourney

A 61-34 rout of Alcoa Monday, Nov. 23, set the stage for Farragut’s eventual championship run in the Gibbs Kroger Thanksgiving Classic last week at GHS.

But Class AA Seymour, the Lady Ads’ semifinal opponent Friday, Nov. 27, required some late-game stellar play for a 40-31 FHS victory.

“It was a dogfight against Seymour,” FHS head coach Wes Edmonds said. “Seymour plays really, really good defense.”

Tied 22-22 against the Lady Eagles after three quarters, FHS point guard Katie Cargo scored 10 of her 15 points in the final eight minutes, helping earn the junior All-tourney honors.

“Cargo came up really big in the Seymour game,” Edmonds said.

Hayley Newby, Farragut junior post and tourney MVP, scored seven of her game-high 17 points in the fourth.

Jessica Griswold added three points and Whitney Smith two.

Against Alcoa, Farragut cruised after building a 25-9 first quarter lead. A balanced Lady Admirals scoring attack was led by Newby with 12, freshman post Katie Overton with 10 and Anna Brinsonwith nine.

“I think the girls came out drinking blood a little bit after the Clinton game [overtime loss Nov. 19],” Edmonds said.

Griswold and Smith scored eight each, Cargo six, Madison Blevins five and Ingram three.
