• Coming off an eighth-place finish in last season’s state tournament in its first-ever season, Hardin Valley Academy Swimming and Diving team has opened the 2009-10 campaign with a 7-1 meet record. Season highlights are triumphs versus Farragut and Webb School of Knoxville. “We’re doing pretty well, a pretty decent season so far,” HVA head coach Andy Wagner said. “They’re really working hard to just get better day-in and day-out. Of his 72-student squad, Wagner said 20 have qualified for state, adding “another eight could.” Top returnees from last season include two girls who earned All-American qualifying times: senior Rachel Cruze (50-yard freestyle) and junior Jenny Darby (100- and 200-free). Wagner pointed out “that in the 33 or 34 years of the Knoxville city regional league [Knoxville-area Interscholastic Swim League], Bearden, Farragut and Webb have finished in the top three [various orders] every year. One of our big team goals is to upset that.”
