• Knoxville Museum of Art presents Alive Into 2010!, a New Year’s Eve celebration in the museum’s Great Hall from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 31. Musical entertainment will feature Teeny Tucker and her eight-piece band from Columbus, Ohio, with special guests Slow Blind Hill. Reserve seat tickets to Alive Into 2010! are $50-$60, and general admission is $40. Admission includes an evening-long buffet, dancing, party favors, a complimentary toast of bubbly at midnight and a fabulous view of the midnight fireworks on Market Square. • The Knoxville Symphony Orchestra’s animated friend, Picardy Penguin, will join Music Director Lucas Richman, vocalist Katy Wolfe Zahn and the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra on stage at the Tennessee Theatre for the upcoming Family Concert. The concert, entitled “I Hear America Singing,” is an All-American sing along suited for children ages 3-8 years old that explores songs that make up American history. • The WordPlayers Second Annual WORD-a-thon is slated for New Year's Eve from noon to midnight at Middlebrook Christian Ministries, 1540 Robinson Road. Christian actors will read aloud the Gospels separated by selected Psalms, which will be read and/or sung. A choral reading of Revelation will begin at about 11 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 31. • The best chocolate event in Tennessee has been postponed. The 25th Annual Chocolate Fest, which originally was scheduled for Jan. 16, 2010, has been postponed to fall 2010. The event will take place at the Knoxville Expo Center, a new venue for the event. This fun, family-friendly event has raised essential funds for the National Kidney Foundation for 25 years. • The Knoxville Symphony Orchestra and Music Director Lucas Richman celebrate the start of 2010 with the music of Ludwig van Beethoven and Johannes Brahms Thursday and Friday, Jan. 14 and 15, 2010, at Tennessee Theatre. • Maryville College Fine Arts Division to hold scholarship auditions. Next month, the MC Division of Fine Arts will hold competitions for two full scholarships. One will be awarded in music and another in either theatre or art. Area high school students who are interested in majoring in art are invited to the competitive portfolio reviews, which will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Jan. 16, 2010, in the new Clayton Center for the Arts. Students interested in majoring in music or theater are invited to the competitive auditions, which will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Jan. 23, 2010, in the Clayton Center. Music auditions will take place in the Recital Hall, and theatre auditions will be held in the Black Box Theatre. Interested high school students must submit applications for admission and be accepted to the college before Jan. 15.

• The Arts & Culture Alliance will present the AIGA Knoxville exhibition “365: AIGA Annual Design Competition” in the Balcony at the Emporium Center in downtown Knoxville from Jan. 8 to Jan. 29, 2010. An opening reception will take place from 5 to 9 p.m., Friday, Jan. 8.

• Take a break from your typical New Year’s Eve celebration this year by taking a late evening show at Oak Ridge Playhouse when they present a new twist on an old favorite, “Nunsense.” Life imitates art as the show about a group of nuns putting on a show to raise money will serve as a special fund-raiser event for the Playhouse itself. But the twist? This time the Reverend Mother and the other four Little Sisters of Hoboken are played by men. The one-weekend only run of the show kicks off with a special 10 p.m, New Year’s Eve performance that includes champagne, hors d’eouvres, party favors, and a midnight countdown. The cost for New Year’s Eve is $25 per person. Beer, wine and soft drinks also will be sold. Subsequent performances will be at 8 p.m., Friday and Saturday, Jan. 1-2, and at 3 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 3. Friday and Saturday tickets are $20, Sunday tickets are $18. Because this is a special event to benefit the Playhouse and not a regular season production, tickets prices are the same for all ages and seating will be general admission. • The Arts & Culture Alliance is slated to present its National Juried Exhibition of 2009, a new exhibition featuring selected artwork from 46 artists in Tennessee, Georgia, Kentucky, Ohio and North Carolina. The National Juried Exhibition was developed in 2006 to provide a forum for local artists to compete on a national scale and display their highest quality work.
