• Knoxville Lacrosse Spring 2010 Registration is underway for boys in fifth through eighth grades. In-person registration and parent meeting at Farragut Middle School cafeteria from 6 to 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 12. Visit for registration forms and spring schedule, or contact for more information.

• Ben Backstrom and Jessie Stephens, former All-state soccer honorees at Farragut High School, helped their Carson-Newman College soccer teams finish among the nation’s top 10 (women) and top 20 (men) in NCAA Division II for 2009. Stephens, a three-year part-time starter on defense, started all 23 games as a senior for a Lady Eagles team (20-3-1) reaching the NCAA Division II tournament quarterfinals with a No. 7 national rank. Backstrom, a junior forward, nailed two game-winning goals — four overall — with four assists in 19 starts for an Eagles team finishing No. 16 nationally (14-5-1).

• The New Year's Day 5K Run and Walk begins at 9:30 a.m., Friday, Jan. 1, 2010, on Neyland Drive at Calhoun's on the River, for all runners and walkers. Pre-registration is open until Friday, Dec. 18. Cost is $20 for all participants. Late registration and race-day registration fee is $25. Knoxville Track Club members can deduct $3 during pre-registration only as part of their membership. Participants who choose not to get a T-shirt may deduct $5 from their registration at any time. All local school students and staff and all local youth organizations are eligible for a $3 discount during pre-registration provided they have 10 athletes and send all entry forms via mail by Dec. 18. Calhoun's on the River will serve a continental breakfast during the post-race festivities. Awards will be presented to the overall first-place Male and Female as well as the Youngest and Oldest Male and Female. Commemorative awards will be given to Top 100 males and females. This is the 1st race in 2010 Grand Prix Series, a year-long competition for Knoxville Track Club members who participate in races as well as volunteer for at least three events. • City of Knoxville’s youth basketball leagues still are open for signups. Boys and girls ages 7-14 can register. League games are played weekly, December through February. Games are held in City recreation centers and local school gymnasiums. League entry fees vary, depending on commissions. For registration forms and more information on leagues, visit
