Davis Family YMCA opens off Northshore
Relocation to Knox County severs Farragut ties

The Davis Family YMCA at Jefferson Park celebrated its grand opening with a ribbon cutting, open house and a series of first classes in the new facility Saturday, Jan. 2.

“The future of this YMCA is fun to think about,” Jim Dickson, president and CEO of YMCA of East Tennessee, said.

The 24,000-square foot building, 12133 S. Northshore Drive, features a wellness floor with strength and cardio equipment; aerobic, cycling, pilates and massage studios, a six-lane pool, a personal training room and lobby areas.

The Y is leaving room to expand.

“The future is bright, because we have plenty of room to expand,” Davis Family YMCA director Vickey Beard said in a previous interview.

“We will start business here and just see what the community needs. We don’t want to plan on building any specific thing, because if we find out we need something else, that’s what we’ll build,” she said.

“We’re trying to react to what the needs are,” she added.

The grand opening celebrations were attended by Y members and employees, as well as various dignitaries, including Knox County mayoral candidate and State Sen. Tim Burchett, R-District 7, State Rep. Ryan Haynes, R-District 17, former Knox County Sheriff and Knox County mayoral candidate Tim Hutchison, Knox County commissioners and The University of Tennessee women’s basketball head coach Pat Summitt.

Speakers kept their remarks short as onlookers and well-wishers braved frigid temperatures to witness the newest Y’s ribbon cutting.

Burchett lauded Jefferson Park developer Scott Davis for his donation of land for the YMCA: “I’m glad to count Scott as one of my friends,” Burchett said as he presented Davis with a plaque commemorating the grand opening.

Davis donated land in the subdivision to YMCA for the new West Knox County location, and the Y was named in honor of his brother, Jefferson Brandt Davis.

The Davis Family YMCA replaces Farragut Family YMCA, which closed in mid-December.

The new Y will be open from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., Monday through Thursday, from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m., Fridays, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturdays and from 1 to 6 p.m., Sundays.

Membership rates start at $24 a month for youth. And like any other YMCA, the Davis Family location will offer financial assistance to those who cannot cover those fees.
