Newby’s 42 breaks FHS girls record

Hayley Newby actually started slow before setting the nets on fire to set a new Farragut High School girls basketball record last week.

Newby, a 5-foot-11 junior post, set the program’s single-game scoring record with 42 points in the Lady Admirals’ 72-52 win versus White’s Creek during Beech Holiday Classic Wednesday, Dec. 30, in Hendersonville.

“It’s actually funny because she actually started off playing really, really poorly,” said FHS head coach Wes Edmonds, whose girls begin the new year 12-3 overall and remain on top in District 4-AAA at 4-0.

“I got on her a little bit, she kinda got fired up and really, really went crazy,” Edmonds added about Newby.

Farragut, which went 2-1 at Beech and finished fifth after opening with a 40-31 loss to Brentwood Academy Dec. 28 — making only one two-point field goal the entire game — rebounded to beat Arlington 56-48, Dec. 29. “That’s the worst I’ve ever seen us play,” Edmonds said of the loss.

Newby added 20 points to lead FHS against Arlington. Jessica Griswold added 12 and Katie Cargo 11 (three 3-point field goals).

Against Brentwood, Katie Cargo’s nine points (all 3-point field goals) led FHS.

Against White’s Creek, Griswold scored nine and Anna Brinson had seven.
