State-ranked Grieco, Farinella shine

Farragut’s state-ranked wrest-ling duo have started 2010 with tournament titles — one going back-to-back.

Greg Grieco, a senior in the 189-pound class ranked No. 4 in state, improved his record to 29-2 by winning the annual Halls Invitational — among a 21-team field — at Halls High School Saturday, Jan. 16.

One week earlier, Grieco finished No. 1 at 189 among an 18-team field at Chattanooga Central High School Jan. 9.

Ethan Farinella, FHS senior at 135 ranked No. 6 statewide, joined Grieco as Chattanooga Central champ, then finished third at Halls. Farinella’s record was 32-4 entering the week.

“Farinella and Greg Grieco, they continue to wrestle very well,” FHS head coach Tim Brunson said. “They continue to lead the way for the team.”

Other Admirals who qualified (top eight) at Halls were junior Connor Johnson, third at 140, and fifth-place finishes for freshman Alec Barkman (103), junior Josh Zink (160) and freshman C.T. Leavell (285).

Skylar Grieco, a 112 freshman, took seventh.

At Chattanooga Central, Leavell finished fourth.

“He’s really come on strong,” Brunson said of Leavell, sporting an 18-12 record to begin the week. “He’s really been turning a lot of corners.”

Brunson said Johnson and Zink “have continued to really progress very well.”

About his freshmen, Brunson said, “They’ve all really grown up since the beginning of the season.”

That also includes Jake Lister (119), Adam Hadjerioua (125), Jordan Zink (152) and Cole Sammi (215).

Also earing praise was junior Josh Hensley at 171. “He’s new to the sport but doing well,” Brunson said.
