Dawgs, Catholic seek region wrestling berth
Alan Sloan - Thu, Jan, 21, 2010
A Region 2-AAA wrestling berth is on the line this week at Bearden High School, as the shorthanded Bulldogs and Knoxville Catholic will decide District 4-AAA’s runner-up spot.
Kevin McGuire, a junior in the 140-pound class who Bearden head coach Donnie Floyd said has been his top wrestler of late, leads the Bulldogs versus KCHS beginning at 6:30 p.m., Friday, Jan. 22.
“He’s my guy doing the best right now, he’s worked extremely hard,” Floyd said of McGuire, who took fifth among a “very, very tough” 16-team field, 10 of those teams out-of-state, at the Sandetti Brawl at Johnson City Science Hill High School, Saturday, Jan. 16.
McGuire also finished third in the 10-team William Blount Coke Invitational Jan. 9.
Injured BHS wrestlers Jake Knox (160) and Kyle Walter (119) “should be back in the next week or two,” Floyd said.
