LCHS to honor centennial of Panthers hoops

Lenoir City High School Athletic Department and Lenoir City Sports Hall of Fame Committee have set a Welcome Back Event to celebrate the 100th anniversary of LCHS basketball.

Event is Friday evening, Feb. 5, at LCHS as Lenoir City basketball teams hosts Maryville starting around 6:30 p.m. Activities are set for halftime of boys' varsity game.

According to Glenn Williams, former LCHS athletic director, baseball and girls basketball head coach, the Panthers’ first team (1909-10) was coached by professor Homer Hammontree, who later became a world-famous evangelist.

Playing on an outdoor “dirt” court until 1920 and traveling to games “by train” according to Williams, Lenoir City beat Maryville College, TMI, Grant University, Knoxville YMCA and Farragut. The Panthers lost at Maryville College and at Farragut.

All Hall of Fame members, former LCHS players, coaches, cheerleaders and managers are invited Friday. Past program contributors will be honored. Reception in LCHS cafeteria begins at 6 p.m. Registration at front door of gym.

For more info, contact Janet McGee, LCHS athletic director, 865-988-2041; Williams, 865-986-8157, Barry White, 865-986-4785, or Rosemary Quillen, 865-986-8824.
