Kind HVA gestures don’t pay at Central

As a tribute to injured Central Lady Bobcats senior standout Blair Brabson, Hardin Valley Academy agreed to swap lay-ups allowing Brabson to start her final home game on Senior Night Tuesday, Feb. 9, at Central.

After the gesture the Lady Hawks (7-15 overall, 7-8 in District 3-AAA) found the points much more difficult to collect.

The Lady Bobcats built a commanding lead and won 51-33.

“When we are struggling on offense, we hope that our defense can generate some points for us,” HVA head coach Jennifer Galloway said. “We were getting some good looks, but we just did not do a good job of knocking them down.”

Tiffany Cantrell scored a team-high 12 points for the Lady Hawks. “We struggled to get our intensity up and when we did it was too late,” she said.

The Lady Hawks’ final regular season test will be at home on Senior Night, Friday, Feb. 12, versus rival Karns.

“We won't take Karns lightly, we have to be intense,” Cantrell said. “We want to come out and play for [senior] Kaitlin [James]. We want to play for all of our seniors.”

Whitney Moore scored 10-points, Kristen Lane four, Jasmine Langston, James and Emily Cornelius each had two and Jennifer Schilling added one.

The Hardin Valley boys (4-20, 2-13 District 3-AAA) fell to Central 95-56 on the road.

Hardin Valley leading scorer Dominic Ratliff collected 13 points in the first half, but was shut down in the second half and managed only four.

However, “We are looking to get a victory against our rival [Karns],” Ratliff said. “But we are going to need to play harder than we did tonight.”

Junior Hunter Smoak scored 13 points and played inspired basketball, fighting for rebounds at both ends Tevin Gunn scored seven, V.J. Brown six, Sherrius Smith five, D.J. Kellogg and Jonathan Franklin three and Justin Wakefield two points.
