‘Oliver!’ the musical opens tonight at FHS

Farragut High School’s production of “Oliver!” features one of the largest casts of any musical in the school’s history with more than 70 students involved in both cast, orchestra and back stage operators.

The title character, an 11-year-old orphan, will be played by Garrison Stallings and Molly Morgan, who each bring something a little different to the character.

Morgan said this is the first musical part she’s played.

“I’m not in chorus; I’ve never been in chorus at all. So my favorite part has also been my most challenging part: learning to sing, learning how to read notes and how to put personality in songs,” Morgan, a senior, said.

And although she has more experience in acting, Morgan said that’s not exactly been easy either.

“It’s hard, especially because I’m playing someone younger than me and of the opposite gender,” she said.

Playing a male character has challenged Morgan to adopt everything from a new voice to new mannerisms.

“I definitely hold myself differently: I’m going to have to look like a boy, if you know what I mean. Not leaning to one side on my hips, trying to have a little bit of a jump in my step,” she said.

But “the voice isn’t really that big of a deal,” Morgan said, because Oliver is so young.

On the flip side, sophomore Garrison Stallings has more experience in singing than acting.

“My favorite thing would probably be the musical numbers, mainly because I’m a singer, not really an actor that much,” he said.

“[The songs] have really worked my falsetto range, because I sing tenor in my choir, but this is the part of an 11-year-old boy, so I get to sing soprano,” Stallings said.

Both Stallings and Morgan said acting and singing were just hobbies for them now; neither expects to find careers in the field.

The cast also includes Will Stone as Fagin, Emily Eaton as Nancy, Robert Wrinkle as Bill Sykes, Kevin Sellers as Mr. Bumble, Kelly Tsaltas as Widow Corney, Mason Manuel as Mr. Sowerberry and Caylor Wrinkle as Ms. Sowerberry.

Paul Gary will play the Artful Dodger, Zack Royster as Mr. Brownlow, T. Van Sickle and Noah Claypole, Bridget Sellers as Bet, Ali Fity as Charlotte, Catherine Lyle as Mrs. Bedwin and Daniel Noles as Dr. Grimwig.

“Oliver!” also will star Madelyn Pierce, Rachel Shannon, K. Donnely, Brooks Bannister, Rachael Maclean, Madison Cantrell, Brian Hooyman, Sam Lister, Hannah Ewing, Julia Grummel, Macey Kessler, Mary Beth Clark, Kirby Travello, M. Buckelew, Rene Comeaux, M.J. Badgett, Cole Grimsley, Daniel Robertson, Joey Mann, Jay Twigg, Jackie Kalister, Jordan Culotta, Tori Chavez and H. McIntosh.

“Oliver!” is jointly directed by FHS drama director Zachary Best and choral director Kenton Deitch.

Tickets, which can be purchased at the door, are $8 for adults and $5 for students and senior citizens.

Show times are at 7:30 p.m., March 18-20, and at 2 p.m., Sunday, March 21, at Farragut High School.

During the show’s four days of production, FHS will collect school supplies for Holston Home for Children’s Beacon School in Greeneville, Tenn.

Anyone who brings school supplies to a showing will receive a free popcorn.
