BHS, HVA softball roll

Bearden High School softball opened its 2010 season with a huge three-run homer and solid pitching, securing victory on the road.

Michael Fredieu’s Hardin Valley Academy girls gave the home folks at HVA a little of everything during its opener: solid pitching, stellar outfield defense, a big fifth inning with the sticks — and freshmen carrying a huge part of the load.

Make it 1-0 for the BHS Lady Bulldogs, an 8-4 winner at South-Doyle Monday evening, March 15, while HVA polished off District 3-AAA foe Anderson County 7-4 Monday.

Two Lady Bulldogs college signees stepped up: Jennifer Griffith, senior right fielder, smacked a three-run homer to proper the offense.

Kaylee Heemsoth, senior staff ace, “pitched well, she hit her spots and did a very good job,” BHS head coach Andrea Veler said of Heemsoth’s complete game effort (seven innings). “She kept it a shutout up until the fifth inning.”

As a team, “Altogether we had a very good offensive night,” Veler said.

Fredieu’s breakdown of HVA’s “real good game” included staff ace Laura Hensley’s pitching, a complete-game effort.

“Laura pitched a real good game tonight, seemed like everything was working for her,” he said about the sophomore. “She stayed in control even though there was some inconsistent calling.”

Meanwhile, “the outfield played solid defense, came up with some really big plays,” Fredieu said.

Jasmine Langston, freshman centerfielder, “had some good catches,” the coach said. Kara Amin, freshman right fielder, “actually threw out two girls at first [base],” adding the team “had no errors at all. That was really exciting and really rewarding.”

Offensively, Hardin Valley freshman Audrey Jaeger’s “had a big hit to put us ahead,” a two-RBI triple in the fifth inning. “Emily Cox had a real good hit to start off that fifth inning ... a single to field field,” Fredieu added about his junior infielder.

“Anderson County was a good team, so it feels good to come off of a win like that.”
