• HALL, A.W. “Al,”
age 84, of Farragut passed away Thursday morning, Feb. 25, 2010. A.W. was a member of Farragut Presbyterian Church. He was a retired supervisor from the U.S. Postal Services with 35 years of service. After retirement, he was a real estate agent. A.W. was a veteran of World War II serving with the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. Hancock in the South Pacific. He was preceded in death by his son, Charles Joseph “Joe” Hall; parents, Arthur and Edna Hall; brother, John H. Hall. A.W. is survived by his wife of 62 years, Lorene Summitt Hall; daughters and sons-in-law, Susanne and Michael Anderson of Hixson, Carolyn and Michael Bowman of Farragut; grandchildren, Julie Anderson of Franklin, Jeffrey Anderson of Hixson, Jennifer Bowman of Knoxville, Jason Bowman and wife, Julianne of Memphis and Katie Hall of Soddy; sister, Eleanor O. Hall of Chattanooga; several nephews and a niece. The family received friends Saturday followed by a funeral service at Farragut Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Thom Nelson officiating. Interment followed in Union Cemetery. • KELLY, Robert “Bob” M.,
age 56, of Knoxville passed away Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2010. Bob was an avid motorcyclist and a commercial hot-air-balloon pilot and instructor. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Kelly Sr.: and mother, Louise Rubelli. Bob is survived by his wife, Linda Kelly; brother, Charles Kelly Jr.; sister and brother-in-law, Sharon and Daniel Cavanaugh; stepfather, David Rubelli; niece, Michelle Figler (Mark); nephew, Daniel S. Cavanaugh (Christina); grandniece, Eden Figler; grandnephew, Hunter Figler; and other beloved family members in Nashville and Pennsylvania. • NICHOLS, Rita Louise,
age 90, passed away Saturday, Feb. 20, 2010, at Mercy Residential Hospice. She was a proud member of Sacred Heart Cathedral. She was preceded in death by her father, Sidney St. John Sappington; mother, Mary Boyle Sappington; loving husband, Cecil Patrick Nichols; daughter, Susan Nichols Drayer; granddaughter, Lisa Dunn; sisters, Margaret Cohill, Catherine Griffith and Marion Butcher; brothers, Harry Sappington, Sidney Sappington, Francis Sappington and Joseph Sappington. She is survived by her children and their spouses, Bo and Patricia Duls, Sidney Nichols, Mitchell and Margaret Goldman, Joseph and Teresa Nichols, John Nichols, Daniel and Patty Nichols, and Michael Nichols; grandchildren, Annie Bott, Hank Bott, Dee Drayer, Bradley Drayer, Anna Duls, Josh Duls, Graham Duls, Mischa Goldman and Valerie Sanders-Goldman, Marshall Goldman, Matthew Goldman, Meredith Goldman, Shawna Nichols, Ashley Nichols, Kayla Nichols, Nick Nichols, Josie Nichols, Danielle Nichols, Natalie Nichols, Corey Nichols, and Evan Nichols; eight great-grandchildren; many loved nieces and nephews; and sister, Ann Smithers. She was a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother, mother-in-law and aunt. The family received friends Thursday at Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel. Mrs. Nichols was taken to Hartzler Funeral Home, Frederick, Md., where the family received friends Sunday. A Celebration of Life service was Monday, March 1, 2010, at St. Peter Roman Catholic Church in Libertytown, Md., with Father Dick Sappington officiating. Her life was a blessing to anyone who knew her. • SHELTON, Mary Ernestine,
age 72, of Knoxville passed away suddenly Thursday morning, Feb. 25, 2010, at her home. Mary was of the Baptist faith. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was preceded in death by her son, Michael Wayne Smith; parents, Lloyd and Anna Mae Young. She is survived by her children, Richard Hartley and wife, Heidi of Cincinnati, Ohio, Connie Smith Kitts of Knoxville, Melody Broyles and husband, Ron of Knoxville, Cynthia Kelly and husband, Robert of Charlotte, N.C., Lee Ann Watts and husband, Matt of Lenoir City, Tracie Brooks and husband, Scott of Knoxville; 15 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sisters, Kathleen Corum of Jackson, Dorothy Waller of Knoxville, Georgia Ann Sisson of Knoxville; brothers, Howard Young and Bill Young, both of Knoxville. • CHAPPELL Jr., William Dorr,
age 83, of Knoxville, died Thursday, Feb. 25, 2010. He was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran and an active member of Westminster Presbyterian Church. Bill was a master craftsman with woodworking and an avid tennis player. He loved many sports, especially the Red Sox and the Vols. Bill was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Catherine Larson; and loving wife of 50 years, Lola Ruth Chappell. Bill is survived by his children, Nancy and husband, Jim Cundall, Deborah and husband, Will Fallon, William III and wife, Cheryl Chappell, John and wife, Connie Chappell, and Kathy and husband, David Dodd; 12 grandchildren; and best pals, Pumpkin and Big Boy. A Funeral service honoring Bill’s life was Monday, March 1, at Westminster Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Buran Phillips officiating. The interment service followed at East Tennessee Veterans Cemetery with full military honors presented by Volunteer State Veterans Honor Guard. • PURYEAR, Jack Hager,
age 71, of Knoxville, formerly of Johnson City and Elizabethton passed away Wednesday morning, Feb. 24, 2010, in Knoxville. Jack was a veteran of the U.S. Army with 32 years of service. He retired from the state of Tennessee Materials and Testing Department. Jack was a member of Dashill Masonic Lodge No. 238 F&AM in Elizabethton. He was a devoted Christian and a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Jennie Brooks Puryear. Jack is survived by his wife of 52 years, Helen Manis Puryear; son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Cathie Puryear of Inman, S.C.; daughter and son-in-law, Tammy and Robert Smith of Knoxville; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.
