Tough go at OR for Hawks baseball after beating Grace

The learning curve of Class AAA baseball continues to be sharp and rugged at times for Luke Renegar's Hardin Valley Academy Hawks.

The latest lumps were taken while compiling an 0-4 record at a tourney in Oak Ridge April 1-3.

The Hawks, beginning the week 3-12 overall and 0-4 in District 3-AAA, managed one pre-tourney win: 4-3 versus Grace Christian Academy Wednesday, March 31.

Winning pitcher Ryan Russell was aided by a save from reliever Chase Kirk. Ben Barnett's RBI ground ball was the difference, driving in Bryan Kolwyck, who doubled and moved to third on a sacrifice.

Individually at Oak Ridge, Renegar said catcher Ty Zollmann came out on a early season “funk” and “really kind of broke out and took some real aggressive swings, including his first home run versus Daniel Boone. Really swung the bat well.”

Despite an 11-2 loss to Sevier County April 1, Renegar said HVA starting pitcher Joey Covell “had his best start of the year.”

Next was a doubleheader loss Friday, 6-2 versus Dobyns-Bennett and 5-4 versus Cocke County.

Despite a 15-5 loss to Daniel Boone Saturday, “I think Zach Ahmad had a big day swinging the bat, putting pressure on the defense,” Renegar said about the HVA junior.
