BHS Softball wins one in Cocoa Beach

Though good pitching partially was let down by unreliable defense, Bearden's Lady Bulldogs managed one softball win in three games during the Cocoa Beach Expo tournament, Cocoa Beach, Fla., early last week.

“The biggest thing I was disappointed in in those three games, we gave up seven errors total, which is uncharacteristic,” BHS assistant coach Leonard Sams said.

Behind a complete-game, nine strikeout performance from BHS staff pitching ace Kaylee Heemsoth, Bearden beat Fleming, Ky. 3-1 Tuesday, March 30. “Kaylee pitched really well,” Sams said.

A Haley Miles double led the winning offense. “She's just playing real well,” Sams added about Miles.

Entering the week, the Lady Bulldogs stood at 6-3 overall, 3-1 in District 4-AAA.

Heemsoth remained effective one day later, allowing a talented Genesea, Ill. team just three runs and six hits while striking out eight, but lost 3-1.

“In all the six years I've been coaching, that's probably the best high school team I have ever seen,” Sams said. “We played probably the best ball we could have possibly played.”

All three runs given up versus Brimsfield, Wis., were unearned during a 3-0 BHS loss March 31.

“Kiarra Freeman, she had a good week,” Sams said about his sophomore centerfielder.

Led by sophomore catcher Emma Kugler, “Our catching has improved tremendously,” Sams said. “ Very few kids tried to steal on her down there. I was very, very happy with her play.”
