Community center ideas sought
Town to host public hearings April 26-27

The town of Farragut wants to know what you want in a community center.

The Town will host public hearings for ideas at 6:30 p.m., Monday, April 26, and at 4 p.m., Tuesday, April 27, at Town Hall, 11408 Municipal Center Drive.

“Rather than saying to people, ‘What facilities do you want?’ We’re saying to people ‘Tell us what kinds of programs you would like to see at a community center,’” Sue Stuhl, Parks and Leisure Services director, said.

Citizens are invited to come to the meetings and recommend programs and activities they’d like to see: swimming? watercolor classes? a place to shoot hoops or play bridge?

The group that is presenting the public hearing, the Town’s Community Center Study Committee, will take those suggested programs and use them to determine which facilities would be necessary to facilitate those activities.

“It’s sort of like an architect going into your house, and instead of you saying, ‘I want these rooms,’ he’d say, ‘Tell me about your lifestyle,’” Stuhl said.

The Community Center Study Committee was formed in spring of last year.

“What they’re supposed to do is take back to the Board of Mayor and Aldermen ideas on what a community center would involve as far as facilities, cost, land and all those things,” Stuhl said.

“So this is not ‘We’re going to build one.’ This is ‘If we were going to build one,’” she added.

In addition to voicing their opinions on which programs should be featured, all attendees to the public hearings will have the opportunity to participate in a charette exercise.

“They’ll get five dots to vote on their top five [programs],” Stuhl said.

For those who can’t make it to the meeting, a comment form is available on the Town’s Web site,, through April 30.
