Bennett sets school home run record; ex-Admiral Tyler Duke remembered

Ethan Bennett’s sizzling string of long-ball success has netted a school record.

The Farragut senior catcher and UT signee, who has smacked 15 home runs in his last nine games, went long twice against Science Hill in a 14-7 FHS win Saturday, April 24, at Cardinal Park in Johnson City.

The second rip versus SHHS gave Bennett 19 on the season, breaking the previous FHS school record shared by Michael McKenry and Davis Burklin (18 each).

At William Blount Monday, Bennett kept the long balls flying, adding two more homers (21 overall) in a 14-0 Ads win.

About his nine-game run, “I’ve never seen anything like it,” said FHS head coach Matt Buckner, whose team was 25-4 overall, 10-1 in District 4-AAA after April 26.

Bennett also has 50 RBI and is red-hot hitting for average (.441) entering the week.

As a team versus SHHS, the Ads pounded out 19 hits.

Nick Williams, UT signee and FHS pitcher-first baseman, went 4-of-5 with a home run.

Starting on the mound Monday, Williams fired a one-hitter.

Earlier Saturday, Farragut survived thanks to outfielder Ryan Montalbano’s throw-out of a Kingsport Dobyns-Bennett runner trying to score the winning run in the bottom of the seventh at K-DB.

The Ads won 5-3 in nine innings. Bennett smacked a two-run homer.

Winning pitcher Logan Hess allowed no earned runs in four innings. Starter Eric Freeman allowed three earned runs in five.
