Diamond Dawgs end Trojan Classic strong

Red Bank and Ooltewah, two of the Chattanooga area’s top high school baseball teams, received a Bulldog Sunday surprise.

Coming off Trojan Classic losses to Wilson Central (10-1) and Cleveland (12-9) Friday April 25, Bearden shook off the disappointment and traveled to Red Bank April 27, dumping the Lions 11-1.

Next stop, within a matter of hours, was a trip to Ooltewah, where the Bulldogs again came up big with a 9-4 victory.

“We beat two really good teams,” said BHS head coach Jack Tate, whose team stood at 12-17 overall, 5-5 in District 4-AAA entering the week. “I was so pleased with their attitudes and their spirit. I was pleased with the whole weekend.”

Sophomore starting pitcher Ty Hill fired a complete game four-hitter against Red Bank.

Sophomore starter Ronnie Broyles went the distance against Ooltewah, shaking off a rough first inning to record six straight shutout innings with six strikeouts. Broyles allowed six hits.

Offensively, Ty Greene had four hits versus Red Bank, while Derek Lance added three hits, scored three runs and stole three bases against Ooltewah.

Tate also praised the Trojan Classic hitting of Zach Sale (seven hits), Trey York (six hits) and Chris Hamilton (six hits).
