Bennett, Pfeifer sniffing diamond records as FHS claims 4-AAA tourney title

Farragut Baseball is ready to break down the door on two high school state records.

In fact, Admirals senior catcher Ethan Bennett, District 4-AAA Most Valuable Player and Tennessee Vols signee, tied the single-season state home run mark by blasting his 24th long ball of 2010 Wednesday against archrival Bearden.

Meanwhile, FHS junior staff ace Philip Pfeifer ran his career record to an eye-popping 37-3 — five away from tying the state record — while firing a complete game five hitter in the Ads’ 11-1 win May 12 to capture the 4-AAA tourney title at FHS’s John Heatherly Field.

Pfeifer, 4-AAA Pitcher of the Year working on only three days rest after tossing eight innings Saturday, ran his perfect record this season to 12-0.

The two-time All-state southpaw struck out 10 while allowing three walks and one hit batter.

Farragut junior shortstop Nicky Delmonico, 4-AAA co-Offensive Player of the Year, blasted a three-run homer to highlight the Ads’ seven-run second inning — greatly aided by three Bearden defensive blunders.

David Allen, senior centerfielder, added a two-RBI single in the second, while Tyler Noland, senior right fielder, started the inning with a bloop double.

Allen and Stewart Martens, FHS senior second baseman, ended with two hits apiece.

Cameron Strickland, FHS freshman outfielder, also singled.

Farragut, 35-5, advances to Region 2-AAA semifinal action Monday, May 17, hosting District 3-AAA runner-up Powell beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Derek Lance led Bearden, district runner-up (19-22), with two hits, while Ty Greene added an RBI single in the fifth.

Other Bulldogs hits came from Trey York and Dakota Stallings.

Bearden travels to powerful District 3-AAA champion Halls (33-1) for a 6 p.m. first pitch Monday.
