BHS track boys 2nd in 1-AAA, Thompson titles lead Lady Irish

Bearden's track and field boys carried the success of two relay teams toward a second-place Class 1-AAA Sectional team finish Friday, May 14, at Kingsport Dobyns-Bennett High School.

Meanwhile, Knoxville Catho-lic's tandem of Joanna Thompson and Renee Maggart combined for three first-place finishes in leading the Lady Irish to a fourth-place girls finish —tops among westside teams.

Top four individual and relay finishers all qualify for next week's TSSAA Class AAA state meet at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro (Thursday-Friday, May 27-28).

The Bulldogs' 4 X 200 (1:30.06) and 4 X 400 (3:24.01) foursomes took first place, while the BHS 4 X 100 finished second. Thompson won girls 1600 (5:12.36) and 3200 (11:08.94), while Maggart was pole vault champ (11-06.00-feet) and took third in high jump.

Individual boys westside champion was Edward Dutton of Hardin Valley Academy, first in 300-meter hurdles (39.49) and third in 110 hurdles.

Boys second-place finishes were BHS's Devrin Young in 200- and 300-meter dashes, Farragut’s Grant Blevins in pole vault and the Bulldogs 4 X 100 relay.

Girls second-place showings were Emily Yarnell of HVA in the 200, Rebecca Stover of Bearden in the 800 and 1600 and the Lady Hawks 4 X 200 team.
