Lovell crash claims life

A 21-year-old man from Loudon County died in a car accident in Lovell Heights Tuesday night, May 25.

Mitchell Hayes apparently was speeding and lost control of his Dodge Neon SRT-4 at about 8:30 p.m. His vehicle hit a TVA Credit Union sign, spun several times and hit a brick pillar in a parking lot before it finally came to a stop.

“The brick pillar was hit with such force it was moved from its foundation nearly an inch,” Knoxville Police Department spokesman Darrell DeBusk said in an e-mail.

Mitchell and his passenger, 19-year-old Timothy Tabors, were ejected from the vehicle.

Mitchell was pronounced dead on the scene. Tabors was transported to The University of Tennessee Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

According to DeBusk, KPD still is investigating the crash.

“Investigators are inspecting the vehicle and reviewing evidence recovered from the scene as well as statements from witnesses. The engine of the Dodge appears to have recently been modified to increase performance,” DeBusk said.
