Pfeifer voted nation’s top pitcher; Bennett, Delmonico 1st team USA

Matt Buckner's quote about three of his Farragut Admirals All-state baseball standouts earning first-team national honors was short but to the point.

“They're all very deserving,” said Buckner, FHS head coach who led the Admirals to the 2010 Class AAA state crown and No. 9 national ranking, about junior pitcher Philip Pfeifer (6-foot, 190-pounds), junior shortstop Nicky Delmonico (6-foot-3, 190) and senior catcher Ethan Bennett (6-foot-1, 215).

Pfeifer, a lefty who went unbeaten last season (16-0, 1.23 earned run average), stood above all high school pitchers nationwide after being named Louisville Slugger High School All-American Team's Pitcher of the Year (as voted by Collegiate Baseball).

Pfeifer struck out 165 and walked just 26 in helping lead the Admirals to a 42-6 final record and its third consecutive state title — the starter and winning pitcher in all three state title games dating back to his freshman season.

Bennett and Delmonico each earned Louisville Slugger All-American honors, as Bennett — state record for single season home runs (27) while setting a national record as the first-ever high school player to hit a home run in 10 consecutive games — was among 11 catchers chosen nationwide.

Delmonico (.485 average, 18 home runs, 75 RBI) was among 29 infielders chosen nationwide.

All three also were named All-American first team by Baseball America — Delmonico and Bennett two of just 10 position players picked while Pfeifer was one of just six pitchers chosen.

USA Today's All-USA High School Baseball Team, 10 seniors, included Bennett as its lone catcher.

The 18-year-old Tennessee Volunteers signee also earned Gatorade State Player of the Year and District 4-AAA Player of the Year honors (.410 average, 73 RBI).

Nick Williams, FHS senior pitcher/first baseman in 2010 who is joining Bennett as a UT Vol this fall, was named a Louisville Slugger Honorable Mention All-American.

Parker Wormsley, helping lead Webb School of Knoxville to a Division II-A state title in 2010 as an infielder/pitcher, also earned Slugger Honorable Mention All-American honors.

Farragut's No. 9 national ranking was part of a Baseball America poll.
