Davidson ‘excited’ as new volleyball skipper at FHS

Susan Davidson has touched base with a number of westside schools — which includes her role in helping develop Farragut-area youth volleyball — during 16 years as an educator and coach.

Davidson’s next mission is to fill some pretty big shoes.

She replaces long-time Farragut High School volleyball skipper David Moore — whose teams dominated District 4-AAA for several years and earned a handful of state tournament berths — as Lady Admirals head coach.

However, Davidson won about 90 percent of her games as a volleyball head coach for 16 seasons (201-22 career record).

“With her experience, we just thought she’d be a great addition to our coaching staff,” FHS athletics director Dwayne Simmons said.

Davidson, an administrative assistant who “was part of developing CBFO and Farragut Middle School Volleyball,” was head coach at FMS for six years, then took over at Webb Middle and coached five years. Also included is five years coaching in Newberry, South Carolina.

“It’s a strong challenge I look forward to,” Davidson said, adding that with an experienced FHS team returning this fall, “We’re blessed with a good group of kids, we’re just going to have to figure out how to work harder and work smarter.”

Davidson added she will “never be able to fill” Moore’s shoes, “But we’re going to try and carry on the tradition he’s laid down.”

A former All-district and All-conference two-sport athlete — volleyball and basketball — at Elon University (N.C.) in the early-to-mid-1980s, Davidson also lettered all four years in softball.

Serving as FMS girls basketball head coach for three seasons, Davidson assisted Webb School of Knoxville head coach Shelley Sexton-Collier with the Lady Spartans Division II state title hoops team in 2008-09.

Davidson will retain her role as freshman girls basketball head coach at Hardin Valley Academy.
