NHC Farragut marks 12 years

NHC Farragut is celebrating its 12th anniversary.

“We just want to thank everyone for all of the services that they’ve given us an opportunity to provide here in the community,” said Vivian Akins, NHC Place Assisted Living admissions director.

“We’re just very grateful that the community has accepted us. And we like to think we’re a very good neighbor here,” she added.

Akins also said she was proud of NHC employees — or partners, as she called them — lauding their training and longevity.

“Here in the Farragut area, we opened in June of 1998. We were here for several years and then made an addition of our rehabilitation unit,” Akins said.

The rehab unit was added about five years ago.

The rehabilitation unit has 90 beds, but there’s still a waiting list and a reservation list, Akins said.

There are 84 apartments on the assisted living side of NHC.

“Our assisted living is licensed by the state, so there are certain restrictions on who we can care for. We have different levels of care,” Akins said.

Nursing staff is at NHC Place 24 hours a day, and Akins said staff helps with everything from bathing and dining to transportation for outings and medical appointments.

Assisted living residents live in apartments and stay in that same unit, even if their level of care changes.

“It’s their apartment and their home. It’s not a facility or anything like that. We try to keep it homey on this side,” Akins said.

The average age of a resident is 88, Akins estimated, and had a predominantly female population.

The rehabilitation unit is funded by Medicare or through PPOs, or private insurances.

“It is a skilled service on the rehab unit. Skilled care is a much higher level of acuity for the patients,” Akins said.

Akins said she’s worked for NHC for 18 years, and was hired on at NHC Farragut the week it opened.

“I actually started as a charge nurse here in the assisted living, and I’ve been in this office nine years, more like 10 years now,” Akins said.

National Healthcare Corpor-ation was founded in Murfreesboro in 1975 with a single nursing home. Since then, the company has grown to include 80 to 90 assisted living and nursing home facilities throughout the southeast.

The company is publicly traded, although several family members of the original family still serve on the board of directors.

There are other East Tennessee NHC locations, including two in Knoxville and another in Oak Ridge.
