Village Green Swim Team claims Smoky Mountain title


Village Green Swim Team continues to dominate East Tennessee waters of late.

Compiling 1,397 points, the Gators claimed League 1 (largest) honors at the 37th Annual Smoky Mountain Invitational, held at Springbrook Pool in Alcoa, Saturday and Sunday, July 10-11.

Meanwhile, Sugarwood Stingrays, 11th overall among a 29-team field (third in League 3) and Concord Hills Recreation Association, 13th overall and fourth in League 3, compiled a handful of first-place victories in Blount County. (More on these teams later in story)

Village Green, two-time defending Greater Knoxville Area Interclub Swim Association “City Meet” champs, won nine individual heats among a field of more than 1,600 swimmers representing 29 teams.


Maddie Stephens (age 11-12), champ in 100-yard IM, 100-free and 50-free; Maggie Melhorn (13-14), first in 50-breaststroke; Samantha Webb (15-18), champ in 50-fly, and Natalie Eilerman (9-10), first in 25-backstroke.

Gators boys individual champs were James Hermes, (9-10) 25-back, and Nick Stedham, (9-10) 50-free.

Sugarwood individual champs were Allison Carbaugh, (11-12) 50-breaststroke, and William Brown, (9-10) 25-fly and 25-free.

Concord Hills individual champ was Sharon Bao, (13-14) 50-back and 50-fly.
