Meksiko Cantina open in Farragut

West End Avenue is home to a new Mexican restaurant with some familiar owners — Meksiko Cantina, owned and operated by Mario, Jorge and Claudia Navarro.

“We’re going to try to offer something new for people to enjoy: the food, atmosphere and tequila bar,” Mario said.

The Navarros formerly owned Estelita’s, which closed in February, and also are owners of Border Taco off Campbell Station Road. The trio now is opening Meksiko (a phonetic spelling of “Mexico”) in the former Estelita’s location, 120 West End Ave.

The menu includes some traditional Mexican dishes such as chile verde or chicken with garlic mojo sauce. However, Mario said he’s adding Latin dishes to the menu as well, items such as ropa vieja or sweet plantains and black beans.

“There are a lot of Mexican restaurants — we have something different,” Mario said.

“We have different options for people,” he added.

One of his most unique offerings, Mario said, is an organic margarita.

“No one else has that,” he said.

The Navarros will resume their monthly tequila tastings, held with Farragut Wine & Spirits, in September. Weekends will feature live music, and Mario said he has special nights — such as ladies’ nights — planned.

The restaurant seats about 160, with a private dining room that seats about 40.

“We have good deals for big parties,” Mario said.

Mario and his wife, Claudia, and brother, Jorge, decided to open a new restaurant at the site of the former because of their relationships with community members.

“I have very good relationships with a lot of people,” Mario said, adding his children attend Farragut schools and he’s lived here 10 years.

“I feel very comfortable with people,” he added.

The trio will divide their time between Meksiko and Border Taco.

Meksiko Cantina will be open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Mondays; 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., weekdays and from 11 a.m. to about 1 a.m. on weekends.
