‘Cove’ waters claim life

A 26-year-old man drowned at the Cove at Concord Park around 5:30 p.m., Sunday afternoon, July 25.

Wilmer Alvarez, a native of Honduras, drowned after leaving the designated swim area at the Cove to swim out toward a buoy.

“Witnesses say … he swam away from the swimming area toward one of the buoys and went under and did not come back up,” Martha Dooley, Knox County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman, said.

Investigators believe the drowning was accidental; Dooley said there was no sign of foul play. Alvarez’s body was recovered by Knox County Rescue Squad around 8:45 p.m., Sunday night, and was taken to the Knox County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The search for Alvarez was a joint effort by KCSO, the Rescue Squad and TWRA.
