• Foothills Bank and Trust recently announced the addition of Brent Watts to its lending team, serving at the bank’s new Farragut office, 11216 Kingston Pike. Watts graduated from Farragut High School in 1997. He went on to attend Maryville College, where he graduated in 2001 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in international business. Watts currently is participating in The University of Tennessee’s Pro MBA program.

• Dawn Willis, of Coldwell Banker Wallace & Wallace, was awarded the coveted Certified Real Estate Brokerage Manager Designation conferred by the Council of Real Estate Brokerage Managers. The CRB designation is recognized as the highest level of professional achievement and symbol of excellence in brokerage management.

• Roane State Community College now offers MRI courses in addition to its selection of CT courses. These courses are specifically for registered radiologic technologists or those eligible to become registered radiologic technologists. An MRI course, “Physics and Instrumentation,” and a course in “Computed Tomography Physics” will be held from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., Wednesdays, at the Oak Ridge campus, beginning Aug. 28. • Mike Martin has joined ResourceTek, the technical staffing and professional recruiting subsidiary of Barge Waggoner Sumner & Cannon, Inc., as senior account manager. Martin will be responsible for business development in the Knoxville and East Tennessee market, as well as an expansion of the firm’s technical and professional recruitment capabilities.

• Coulter & Justus, P.C. announces the promotion of Kevin McCollum to principal, effective

July 1.



Principal represents the highest level of accomplishment and responsibility and recognizes an individual for his experience, expertise and service to client and the firm. McCollum began his public accounting career in 1995 and joined Coulter & Justus, P.C. in 1998.

• Pellissippi State Community College will offer a Building Performance Institute class, a 45-hour offering that provides training in energy audits. Upon completion, students may take the written and field exams required for BPI certification. Students attend class from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Wednesday through Sunday, Aug. 4-8. Participants who wish to take the $325 BPI certification exam while the material is fresh in their minds may start the exam process as soon as the following Friday. A 50-hour online, instructor-supported BPI course also is available. Early registration is encouraged; class size is limited. Fee for the in-class option is $675. • Julie Thacker has joined Coulter & Justus, P.C. as a staff accountant in the audit department.  Thacker has a bachelor’s degree in accounting from The University of Tennessee and will receive her master’s degree from UT in August. Thacker completed an internship with the firm in 2009.

• BB&T Corporation reported earnings for the second quarter of 2010. Net income available to common shareholders totaled $210 million, or $.30 per diluted common share, compared with $121 million, or $.20 per diluted common share, earned during the second quarter of 2009. These results reflect increases of 73.6 percent and 50.0 percent, respectively. Results include $38 million, or $.03 per share, of merger-related charges.

• A new law required by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will require all professionals who repair or renovate homes or other buildings constructed before 1978 to adhere to strict lead-safe work practices. Homeowners are not covered in the new ruling. Tips and complaints about safe lead practices can be made to the EPA on its hotline, 800-424-LEAD

• Pinnacle Financial Partners, Inc. reported its second quarter results. Loss per fully diluted common share available to common stockholders was $0.85 for the quarter ended June 30, 2010, compared to loss per fully diluted common share available to common stockholders for the quarter ended June 30, 2009 of $1.33. Pinnacle also reported a loss per fully diluted common share available to common stockholders of $1.02 for the six months ended June 30, 2010, compared to a loss per fully diluted common share of $1.34 for the six months ended June 30, 2009.

• Patsy Bragg has joined Coulter & Justus, P.C. as the firm’s business development and training coordinator. Bragg, a graduate of Concord College in West Virginia, holds a bachelor’s degree in marketing and has more than nine years experience in project management. 

• Southern Appalachia Railway Museum will hold its last two dinner trains of 2010 at 6 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 21 and Saturday, Sept. 18. Tickets are $65, which includes the train ride, dinner and all taxes. Dinner is provided by Oliver’s catering. Reservations are required; call 865-241-2140.

• Adriana Peñalba has joined Coulter & Justus, P.C. as a staff accountant in the tax department. Adriana, a Morristown native, received her bachelor’s degree in accounting and finance from Georgetown University and is a recipient of the Niswonger scholarship. 

• Larry W. Clark, assistant manager in Nuclear Fuel Supply for the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge Office, retired July 17 after serving nearly 40 years as a federal employee. Clark began his professional career at TVA in 1974 and joined the DOE in 1984.

• Chuck Tinker has joined Pinnacle Financial Partners as vice president and credit analyst. He is based at the Northshore Drive office. Tinker brings more than six years of experience and comes most recently from United Community Bank in Lenoir City, where he served as a credit analyst.

• Pellissippi State Community College will offer “Social Media Marketing” Aug. 3-24, from either 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. or from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Class is on the Pellissippi Campus, 10915 Hardin Valley Road, in the Alexander Building, Room 129. • YMCA has changed its name to “The Y,” but is not altering its missions. Changes will include a new logo, and new language for all communications. The YMCA of East Tennessee has signed on to be an early implementer of the national plan, and will complete the transition by the end of 2010. Staff and volunteer training already has started.

• Dianna Glandon, owner of Above the Rest Balloon & Event Designs in Knoxville, and Rachel Glandon, Designer, recently earned Certified Balloon Artist status while attending the World Balloon Convention in Texas.  The CBA certification is the highest designation in the balloon industry.

• Steve Bostic, PE, vice president of Lamar Dunn & Associates, Inc., has been elected president of the American Council of Engineering Companies of Tennessee for 2010-2011. David Harrell, PE, regional vice president of Tennessee operations of Vaughn & Melton Consulting Engineers, Inc., was elected second vice president of the organization.

• East Tennessee Technology Access Center, a regional nonprofit technology resource center for people with disabilities, announces it has received a grant from Tennessee Council on Developmental Disabilities to establish “Next Chapter Book Clubs” in several counties in East Tennessee. The purpose of the Next Chapter Book Clubs is to promote socialization and inclusion of people with disabilities in community settings through reading of books. 

• Doug Hamburger, district manager for Walgreens Knoxville, along with area store managers, presented a check for $68,485.15 to Dr. Steve Ross, senior vice president of strategic development at UT Cancer Institute at The University of Tennessee Medical Center. The check represented money raised from the sale of OUTLIVE T-shirts sold in area Walgreens store and from in-store donations.

• Mercy Health Partners CEO David Jimenez announced that MHP’s parent company, Catholic Healthcare Partners, has been named as one of the nation’s Top 10 Health Systems for clinical quality and efficiency by Thomson Reuters for the second year in a row. Jimenez said that data concerning the quality and efficiency of MHP’s seven hospitals in East Tennessee are included in the information studied by Thomson Reuters.  Mercy has three hospitals in Knoxville and one in LaFollette, Oneida, Jefferson City and Newport.

• Roxana Saberi, an Iranian-American journalist who was falsely accused of espionage and imprisoned for 100 days in Iran, will speak on Wednesday, Sept. 15, at the Clayton Center for the Arts on the Maryville College campus. Her lecture, titled “On the Streets of Tehran,” will focus on the six years she lived in Iran as a journalist and witnessed the developments leading up to the 2009 disputed Iranian election. Free and open to the public, the event is part of the Fall 2010 Community Conversations series and will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Clayton Center’s Ronald and Lynda Nutt Theatre. A book signing for her memoir, “Between Two Worlds: My Life and Captivity in Iran,” will follow the lecture.

• Kevin J. Le Blanc, chairman of Le Blanc Financial Group, has been recognized by GAMA International with a Platinum Level International Management Award.

• United Community Bank announces that Gregory L. Byrd, senior vice president of commercial lending in the bank’s Farragut office, has graduated from the Graduate School of Banking at Louisiana State University. Byrd is one of 194 bankers from throughout the south who completed the three-year program, which covers all aspects of banking, economics and related subjects.

• Jeff Loos has joined Coulter & Justus Financial Services, LLC as a personal wealth consultant. Loos, a UTK graduate, has more than 20 years experience in providing wealth management services to a diverse group of professionals and business owners.

• Y-12 National Security Complex will help veteran-owned companies learn how to do business with federal, state and local governments, agencies and other companies, from small businesses to prime federal contractors. The 4th Annual East Tennessee Veterans Business Conference will be held Aug. 3 at Y-12’s New Hope Center in Oak Ridge. • BB&T presented Farragut High School teacher Angela Breeding with the 2010 Teacher of the Year award. Breeding is credited with creating the Renaissance Academy for Historical Research, being named to represent the state of Tennessee at the Presidential Academy for American History and Civics and being recognized as the Tennessee Teacher of the Year by Daughters of the American Revolution.

• Parkwest Medical Center recently awarded Doris King, who works in environmental services, with its third annual 10-Foot Award for consistently being upbeat, positive and helpful to everyone she encounters. The 10-Foot Award is supported by The Wayne Heatherly Excellence in Patient Care Endowment, established by family, friends, colleagues, medical staff and employees in recognition of the more than two decades Heatherly led Parkwest.

• Metropolitan Drug Commission announces its two newest staff members, Heather Sutton and Sarah Harder. Sutton has been working as an intern for the Metropolitan Drug Commission since January. She recently was promoted to media relations and project director. Harder, former public health educator for Knox County Health Department, joins the Metropolitan Drug Commission as its project director.

• Kendra Teffeteller has joined Coulter & Justus, P.C. as a staff accountant in the Audit Department. She is a graduate of The University of Tennessee Chattanooga and has about two years experience in audit. While in Chattanooga, she was with Ernst & Young LLP. 

• Green job training, campus recycling initiatives and sustainable building practices at the new Blount County Campus have garnered Pellissippi State Community College a 2010 Governor’s Environmental Stewardship Award. Pellissippi State won the Green Schools – Higher Education category.
