W. Knox businessman launches new career

A local businessman has set out on a new stage of life, business-wise: Greg Carter left a job of insurance sales to market a book he first published in the mid-1990s.

“People can hear the excitement in my voice,” Carter said of his career move.

After 30 years in the hotel business, most as a director of convention services, Carter wrote a book that detailed the steps of planning an event.

“I handled groups from 20 to 8,000. And my specific responsibilities were two-fold: one was to make sure everything was taken care of on the hotel side, but also to make sure the client was happy,” he said.

“I met a lot of clients who were new to the planning process … and so I had to work with them, assist them, train them and hopefully make their job easier.

“And in the process, I decided to write a book that would take you through all the steps,” he added.

That book was “Meetings Made Easy,” and Carter published it in hardcover form in 1995.

Carter later left the hotel business to sell insurance, but now is returning to what makes him happy — the book, now updated and re-published as an e-book on

“After 30 years in the hotel business, I decided to do something else for a short time, and after that time I sat down and met with a counselor to try to figure out what makes me happy.

“And in that process, the book came up again,” Carter said.

Fittingly for such a state of mind, Carter said the book is “a very light, easy read,” featuring cartoon characters he designed himself.

“I designed them, but I didn’t draw them,” he laughed.

“The book will save you time, stress and money … It’s great for new planners and for new ideas for experienced planners,” Carter said.

The e-book is geared toward the hotel and convention center industry, but Carter said it would be great for any planners — even future brides.

“The bride sometimes has no idea about booking a hotel, and she can quickly read a chapter and find out what to do,” Carter said.

On his Web site, Carter offers three products: “Meetings Made Easy,” plus checklists and pre-planning tools as well as budget spreadsheets.

The budget spreadsheet includes 20 itemized and individualized sheets that include everything from revenues — such as registration, sponsors and advertising — to expenses such as speakers, foods and beverages. The spreadsheets are set up so a planner only has to plug in his or her specific numbers into already-specified equations.

“It’s also totally protected so that you don’t worry about messing up the formulas,” Carter said.

“You can see immediately, through your process, whether you’re making money or losing money and what you need to do.

“It’s not your typical one sheet that shows your revenues and expenses,” he added.
