Whitehead to lead Warriors in state title repeat effort

Christian Academy of Knoxville’s 2010 boys golf team seems loaded in attempt to repeat as Class A/AA state champions.

Junior Kory Webb, state tournament medalist runner-up, and senior Lee Whitehead (pictured), who tied for sixth at state, lead Warrior state repeat hopes.

Hank Fennell, CAK head coach, said the boys “should be pretty strong,” with no golfers lost to graduation — though one 2009 contributor quit.

“Our challenge will be finding that fifth guy that can be consistent for us.

“Our expectations are really high.”

About tying for sixth, “That was pretty good for me,” Whitehead said. “I was one shot away from being in a tie for third.”

Whitehead led CAK in scoring average last season. “Lee’s not the biggest guy, but he’s always been to keep it on fairways and greens,” Fennell said. “He’s really straight [with tee and approach shots].”

Webb “is long off the tee, good recovery, good around the green,” Fennell said.

Playing No. 3 is Anderson Payne, a senior, followed by Anderson’s brother, sophomore Taylor Payne, playing No. 4. Senior Nick Coover is No. 5.

“When Anderson’s on, he has the opportunity to go really low.”

A new Warrior face looking to contribute is junior Greg Gilbert.
